California shoecore outfit Cold Gawd blends R&B-style melodies into a hardcore/shoegaze hybrid for a fresh, intriguing sound. On its first two albums, Cold Gawd was entirely the work of multi-instrumentalist Matthew Wainwright, who grew up listening to rap and R&B before discovering rock and metal and finally stumbling on shoegaze and realizing that heavy music could also be beautiful. He started out in hardcore and emo bands, but nothing ever took off until he used the enforced time-out of the pandemic to finally produce and self-release his debut album, 2020's The Creative Pursuits of Me and You. Wainwright signed to Dais Records for Cold Gawd's sophomore album, 2022's God Get Me the F**k Out of Here, and formed a touring band consisting of mostly Black and Latino musicians. The full band collectively contributed to a third album, I'll Drown on This Earth, which followed in 2024.
