b. 1944, Omagh, Northern Ireland. Originally a member of the Polka Dots Showband, McBride was signed to the Emerald label as a solo artist in 1967. After an abortive first single, ‘The Blackboard Of Your Heart’, McBride found fame in 1967 with a cover version of Bill Anderson’s ballad ‘Five Little Fingers’, produced by Tommy Scott. The song reached UK number 19 in August. Signed by Dick Katz of the Harold Davison Agency, McBride seemed a likely bet to cross over into mainstream cabaret success in the UK, but a follow-up hit proved elusive. His 1968 album, Frankie McBride Sings, was a moderate seller which scraped into the UK Top 30. His fortunes in Ireland, where he enjoyed a hit with ‘Burning Bridge’, continued for a period. McBride has continued recording and performing into the 90s.
