A lifelong Washington, D.C., resident, Ian Mackaye, with the help of like-minded friends and his own fierce work ethic, helped create a progressive punk community in the nation’s capital. Defiantly independent, Mackaye co-founded Dischord Records as a vehicle for his hardcore band Teen Idles, and slowly nurtured it to become one of the country’s foremost independent record labels. Along the way, he blazed musical trails with the legendary hardcore band Minor Threat, his pioneering emo group Embrace, the challenging, uncompromising Fugazi, and the political folk-punk of the Evens. Mackaye’s refusal to shy away from political content and his devotion to punk’s ideals has made him the genre’s de facto conscience.
