Manchester's post-punk feminist outfit ILL formed in 2012 and set forth in true D.I.Y. fashion self-producing a series of singles and creating their own music videos and artwork. Following the dissolution of their previous act Womb, bandmembers Harri Shanahan (vocals and keyboards), Sadie Noble (guitar), Whitney Bluzma (bass) and Fiona Ledgard (drums) put out a cover of the Stooges "Cock in My Pocket." They released two more EPs and the three-track EP The Housewives in 2014. With each recording, their sound developed, expanding beyond post-punk's purview to embrace psych leanings and surrealism alongside a lyricism that was by turns comedic and ferociously political. ILL also began to draw attention for their live shows, performing improvisational pieces at Supernormal Festival in 2015 and Raw Power Festival in 2016. In 2017 they signed to independent British label Box Records and worked on their debut long-player. We Are Ill was eventually released in 2018 and included Tamsin Middleton on vocals. The album was preceded by the patriarchy-bashing lead single "Hysteria." ~ Bekki Bemrose
