Known early on for their 19th century cavalry garb and remarkable amounts of hairspray, the Alarm parlayed robust, folk-inspired rock anthems into an eight-year, five-album career in their first incarnation. Fronted by Mike Peters, the Alarm hit hard with Declaration in 1984, and built upon that album's success with Strength and Eye of the Hurricane, easily two of the most popular records of the mid-'80s "alternative" rock movement. Like their peers U2, INXS, and R.E.M., the Alarm found themselves poised for superstardom by 1987. But subsequent albums Change and Raw failed to capture the imagination of the Welsh band's huge worldwide audience, and Peters ultimately bowed out in 1991.
Four years after the breakup of the Alarm, Mike Peters finally put out his first solo album -- in the U.K. only -- 1995's Breathe. That was soon followed by Second Generation, a collection of Alarm B-sides and unreleased tracks that Peters re-recorded and released to the Alarm fan club. While he was making 1996's Feel Free, his second solo album, Peters was diagnosed with cancer. In the fall of 1997, he made Rise, the first of his solo outings to receive widespread U.S. distribution. As with his previous two albums, Rise comprised optimistic songs of hope and freedom, much like the ones Peters made famous in the Alarm. Joining him in the studio for a few of the sessions was ex-Cult guitarist Billy Duffy; they subsequently formed a new band, Colorsound, who issued their first and only album in early 1999.
After Colorsound dissolved, Peters assembled a new edition of the Alarm, and would move back and forth between his work with the band, his solo career, and other projects including Dead Men Walking (a supergroup also featuring members of Spear of Destiny, the Damned, the Sex Pistols, and the Mighty Wah!), Los Mondo Bongo (a collaboration between Peters and members of Joe Strummer's post-Clash band the Mescaleros), and the Poppy Seeds (a prank group with the Alarm impersonating a teenage pop band). Prevailing after a diagnosis of lymph cancer in 1996, Peters was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in 2005, and he struggled with the disease for the next two decades while continuing to write and record new music. He died on April 29, 2025, at the age of 66. ~ Jim Nelson
