Since he began posting mixes online in 2019, Toronto producer Signature by SB has largely kept his personal backstory under wraps. As his moniker suggests, he’d rather be identified by his sound, a refreshing fusion of bhangra-inspired grooves and hip-hop-schooled production in service of urbane Punjabi-sung pop songs. His ascent has been greatly abetted by his frequent collaborations with singer Bhalwan, whose unique combination of swagger and sensitivity perfectly complements Signature by SB’s percussive grooves on 2020 single “Bad Habits” and its G-funk-flavored successor “Ik Botal.” The duo capped the year with a full-album statement, Now or Never, which introduced elements of neo-soul and reggaetón into the pancultural mix. Their partnership continues to evolve on the meditative 2021 single “Letter to an Angel,” where Signature by SB’s head-nod beats and Bhalwan’s devotional vocals come wrapped in silken strings and dreamlike textures.
