Not to be confused with the English actress of the same name, the jazz and cabaret singer Sylvia Syms was initially a devotee of Billie Holiday, although her subsequent style didn't resemble Lady Day's in any significant manner. The singer spent the '40s performing in Greenwich Village clubs where she was noticed by Mae West, who tapped the young Syms for a role in a revival of DIAMOND LIL. Syms would go on to act in theater and film over the years, but she also recorded for Decca throughout the '50s and scored a Number One chart success with her 1958 version of "I Could Have Danced All Night" from MY FAIR LADY. Syms also recorded with jazz musicians such as Kenny Burrell on the 1965 Prestige LP SYLVIA IS! An exceptional interpreter of lyrics, Syms was greatly admired by Frank Sinatra, who produced her 1982 Reprise albums SYMS BY SINATRA.
