As longstanding torchbearers for Scottish indie pop, The Pastels have devoted themselves to bountiful melodicism while quietly evolving from decade to decade. Formed in 1981 in Glasgow’s fertile music scene by Stephen McRobbie, the band struck a rare balance between scrappiness and sensitivity with early singles on iconic UK labels like Creation and Rough Trade. The band really gelled in the 1990s, when drummer Katrina Mitchell and bassist Annabel “Aggi” Wright began sharing vocal duties with McRobbie on 1995’s more ornate and assured Mobile Safari. Contrary to its name, 1997’s Illumination darkened and deepened The Pastels’ sound to surprisingly gorgeous effect. The band’s output slowed after that, with sporadic collaborations and soundtrack work punctuated by 2013’s fresh-faced Slow Summits. Devoted students of underground music, The Pastels have also covered the likes of The Silver Jews, Daniel Johnston, and The New York Dolls.
