The dance music of Central Europe is combined with West African rhythms by Berlin-based Trio Grande. Incorporating a diverse blend of French bourees, German zwiefaches, Schottische, and waltzes, the group has created a unique dance-inspiring sound. The foundation for much of Trio Grande's music is centered around the unusual interplay between two hurdy-gurdies played by Silke Reichmann and Hans Lang. Although the original group was together for only four years, their legacy has been carried on by succeeding musicians, including guitarist/bouzouki player Wolfgang Zimmerman and percussionist Peter "Kebba" Lober, a student of Gambian and Senegalese rhythms for more than two decades. Reichmann, who performed on the soundtrack for the film The Name of the Rose also plays transverse flute and percussion and sings, while Lang also plays diatonic accordion. Trio Grande has periodically collaborated during concerts with Gambian musicians Amie Jammeh (vocals and dance) and Yusupha Kuyateh (kora and vocals). ~ Craig Harris
