For The Cat Empire, a multidecade career started with a simple “Hello.” Sprung from a fruitful scene of young Melbourne jazz devotees, the band made a lasting impression with the multicultural block-party vibe of that 2003 single. Casually transcending the limits of any one genre—or era—the band have since proven omnivorous across both their robust catalog and loose-limbed live show. Observe the entwined reggae, funk, hip-hop, and flamenco flourishes on 2005’s “Two Shoes,” or the confident pop and EDM overtures of 2013’s “Brighter Than Gold.” A lasting constant has been lead vocalist Felix Riebl, whose rapid-fire delivery and charismatic swagger has enjoyed fresh new company since he and co-founder Ollie McGill overhauled the band’s lineup in 2022. Recruiting members including standout singer/bassist Grace Barbe and singer/trumpeter Lazaro Numa, The Cat Empire began to integrate French and Spanish lyrics alongside more pronounced Afro-Cuban influences. Riebl still holds court with panache on 2024’s wickedly catchy “Doing Fine,” all while sharing the spotlight with a spirited procession of percussion and horns.
