Some DJs bring the party. Others are the party, like Seth Troxler who burst onto the austere minimal-techno scene in the mid-2000s, bearing a born entertainer’s antic sense of fun. Born in Kalamazoo, MI, in 1985, he grew up listening to Prince and Dance Mania, mentored by his DJ stepfather; he moved to Detroit at 14 and was soon throwing parties and working in a record shop. His 2001 relocation to Berlin threw him into the heart of a hedonistic club scene, and his bookings exploded. On crowd-pleasing records for labels like Crosstown Rebels and Spectral Sound, Troxler has melded minimal’s wiggly rhythms with a louche sense of funk, and he’s brought the same wide-ranging sensibilities to his acclaimed mixes, like 2015’s DJ-Kicks, and his 2022 GRAMMY-nominated collab with Diplo and Desire, “Waiting For You.”
