In the swashbuckling world of melodic techno, few artists dole out as much dark drama as Agents of Time. Since 2013, the duo of Italy’s Andrea Di Ceglie and Luigi Tutolo has been lifting up dance floors—and lighting up labels like Tale of Us’ Afterlife—with throbbing fusions of trance, techno, and house. A typical track starts lean and billows outward, but they’ve discovered myriad ways to tweak that formula. “Dream Vision,” from 2018, has a saucy hint of ’80s synth-pop in its central riff. The Kompakt single “Under Control” taps Italo disco’s robotic chug. And the anthemic “Midnight Drive” has all the dandyish poise of vintage Depeche Mode.
