“If I had to highlight one single trait of flamenco, I would pick its breadth,” singer-songwriter Rocío Márquez tells Apple Music. “Not only in terms of the styles—and there are many, from the seguirillas to solearas—but also the variety of emotions, from the bulería to tango. There are themes of protest and vindication, and then there is the sweetness that singers can express in the guajira and milonga. The huge range of themes and feelings matches the breadth of flamenco. You can experience this variety of interpretation not just in the singing, but also in the guitar playing and dancing.” Márquez, whose debut album, Aquí y Ahora, appeared in 2009, has enjoyed critical acclaim since then. She has compiled this playlist especially for Apple Music. “What’s beautiful about this music is the complete lack of hierarchy,” she says. “This particular art form is equipped with all possible tools, so freedom can always reign supreme.”
