London’s Portico Quartet rose to prominence shortly after forming in 2005, garnering a Mercury Prize nomination for their innovative first LP, Knee-Deep In The North Sea, two years later. Both “Prickly Pear” and the title track marry nu-jazzy, sax-led instrumental breaks with a percussive pan-style instrument known as the hang, providing an elegant bedrock for their compositions. But they’ve tweaked their sound since the departure of their hang player, Nick Mulvey, in 2011, pursuing a Radiohead-like reconfiguration on the eerie breakbeat of 2012’s “Ruins” and 2017’s moody, polyrhythmic “A Luminous Beam”.
