As Prince Far I was getting started, producer Coxsone Dodd nicknamed him King Cry Cry for his propensity to break into tears. Throughout the early '70s, the Jamaican singer learned to channel that emotion into his heavy reggae dubs, an effort that culminated in 1975 with the release of his first album, the singular Psalms for I, which lays 10 bible passages over woozy, reverberating beats. This officially launched a prolific and long-ranging career, but even on secular cuts, his gruff voice adds a little bit of the spiritual, and his delirious instrumentals describe wordless journeys.
