After being educated in the Indian classical music of his Mumbai home, Trilok Gurtu sat down behind a drum kit in 1970, and the world of percussion was never the same. As a solo artist and bandleader, the drummer and tabla master blended the traditional music of his homeland with jazz. His collaborators—including jazz greats Don Cherry, Joe Zawinul, and John McLaughlin, ambient producer Robert Miles, and boundary-hopping talents like Gilberto Gil, Bill Laswell, and Annie Lennox—reflect his genius and pay tribute to his versatility and vision.
