A family musical legacy can be a heavy burden. The desire to follow in huge footsteps is tempered by the more realistic (but challenging) notion that the scions of greatness should carve their own path. Such is the plight of Wolfgang Van Halen, son of the late, great guitar wizard Eddie and nephew to Van Halen drummer Alex. Add the fact that Wolfgang did a stint in Van Halen himself—standing in for beloved bassist and backing vocalist Michael Anthony—and the legacy becomes even more complicated. But Wolfgang has found a way to strike a balance. Sure, he’s adopted Van Halen’s original band moniker, Mammoth, as his own. And yeah, Mammoth WVH specialize in upbeat rock spiked with serious guitar pyrotechnics. But Wolfie is of his own generation: Songs like “Another Celebration at the End of the World” and “Don’t Back Down” are more informed by ’90s alt-rock and early 2000s stoner rock, respectively, than Van Halen’s late-’70s/early ’80s heyday. “Like a Pastime” is skittering indie rock that explodes into a triumphant chorus, while “Distance” has a modern country sound that couldn’t be further from Van Halen’s pop-metal wheelhouse.
