If you want a different way to experience familiar hits, hearing songs sung by their original authors, without the embellishment of backing bands or production effects, can be a revelation. It’s a tradition for songwriters to give stripped-down performances at Nashville’s famed Bluebird Cafe on a nightly basis, but usually only those lucky enough to be in the room get to enjoy them. The new documentary Bluebird captures an array of performances that Dave Barnes, one of its many tunesmith interviewees, says are “as much education as entertainment. People can hear the songs from the people that wrote them. What’s so unique about that is their version of the song is sometimes more personal than the artist’s version.” Confined neither to generation nor genre, the film’s soundtrack features the Tim McGraw and Taylor Swift duet “Highway Don’t Care,” sung with acoustic earnestness by its four composers Mark Irwin, Josh Kear, Brad Warren and Brett Warren; the Jon Pardi jam “Dirt on My Boots,” delivered with homey swagger by its authors Rhett Akins and Ashley Gorley; and Alan Jackson’s early-’90s honky-tonk ballad “Here in the Real World,” done in referential, unvarnished fashion by Jackson’s co-writer Mark Irwin, along with warm renditions of self-penned tunes by singer-songwriters Tenille Townes and Maren Morris.
