Invoking the sprit of Miles Davis, Adam Pickering improvised all ten piano pieces here in three hours in front of a rapt audience. It’s fascinating to discover the turns and resolutions each track reaches knowing that they’re moments of instinct rather than trial and error–how light gently breaks into the circling portent of “Improv #1 - A Tale of Two Modes”’s, for instance. Meanwhile, “Improv #4 - In a Different Time”’s melancholy is so cogent it can only have flowed direct from Pickering’s soul.
