Everything Is Debatable
Album · Alternative · 2013
Insisting on enough reverb to drown an orchestra, Forrest Kline (a.k.a. Hellogoodbye) creates a modern rock album that owes as much to Foster the People and Arcade Fire as to the classic Kinks or Zombies album previously considered his influences. The performances throughout the third Hellogoodbye album, Everything Is Debatable, are nervous and jittery, with handclaps and ensemble vocals galore to give everything the feeling that more than one man is bringing you the news. Producer Joe Chiccarelli does everything he can to further this glorious illusion. “Die Young, Die Dumb; Not Soon” sounds like a marching band signed on to the party. The title track incorporates electro-disco grooves for even more glitz and glamour, and the intriguing “Just Don’t Let Go Just Don’t” comes across like an ‘80s power ballad where Bryan Adams, Berlin, and The Outfield have gathered together for a nasty romp under Kline’s direction. Even the album’s final goodbye, “A Near Death Experience,” preens and purrs like a full-on orchestrated ‘80s ballad with an epic sense and an open heart.
