Rhapsodize finds pianist Eldar Djangirov in extraordinary form with bassist Raviv Markovitz and drummer Jimmy Macbride. Leading off with the unbridled intensity of “A Night in Tunisia,” the Kyrgyz native (of Volga Tatar and Russian heritage) offers a ferocious and nimble read on the bebop lineage, a bravura swing opener in the spirit of “Sweet Georgia Brown” from his 2005 album, Eldar. But apart from a relaxed ride through the Ann Ronell standard “Willow Weep for Me,” Djangirov and trio offer mainly originals of an intricate and modern bent, with a lithe rhythmic energy coursing through tunes like “Anthemic,” “Burn,” “Blackjack,” and the title track. “Variations on a Bach Prelude” is downright acrobatic, laying down the technical gauntlet with Art Tatum-esque fire. And the “Black Hole Sun” cover is perfect grist for the trio as well, taking its time, laying deep into every strange harmony and crushing riff.
