What would a modern-day Orlando—the ever-evolving, identity-fluid protagonist of Virginia Woolf’s novel—be like? It’s a question Noshia explores with her Night Swim debut, and her refusal to be tied to anything. “I never wanted to define myself, like who I am, my personality, and what I’ll be in the future, I have never made any conclusions,” she tells Apple Music. She challenges notions of predetermination on the title track. “We were in a swimming-like state in our mothers’ wombs. I wanted to express being in that state, before I had been born,” she says. The value of fluidity and freedom is also the album’s musical device. The classically-trained singer-songwriter weaves electronic music with classical motifs and themes. The result is a rich music tapestry that defies easy categorisation. The 20-year-old created the album’s tracks between ages 15 and 18. She teams up with left-field producer Dutch E Germ on “Question Mark”; and fellow Beijingers Soulspeak on fuzzed-out track “Kid” and Fishdoll on the sultry “Y” and shivering “Hurt Somebody”. They all highlight a stunning first effort from a musician just starting to hit her stride.
