Flies In My Room - EP
Album - Indie Rock, Music, Alternative
On his debut EP, Dharawal singer-songwriter Aodhan—Aidan Whitehall—welcomes us into his gentle world and introspective mind. Across five tracks he shares deeply wistful, often existential musings, sung over soft guitars and gentle melodies. The opening title track is a smooth and rhythmic introduction to the nature of Whitehall’s pensive lyrics: “I start paying close attention to the warm lights/That keep on buzzin' like the flies in my room… Wonder if it's normal for my head to constantly drift out at sea/And if it's not/It's fine by me.” On “Twelve Again,” he wishes to return to that younger age, “because I really miss the feeling of having good friends.” “Daily Meditation” is a doting ode to the person he loves; what starts as a tender, romantic ballad (“Don’t you know your love’s taken me away?”) eventually reveals itself to be a story of not only unrequited love (“I was thinking one day I could call you mine”), but rather bitter rejection (“I guess you never liked me or this song, and that’s okay… I guess I’ll just go fuck myself”). That narrative approach to songwriting is also felt on the final track, “Just Friends,” which begins with Whitehall recounting a kiss with someone he’d wanted to be “just friends” with, and as the verses progress, he ponders the relationship, goes back and forth with his feelings, and grapples with not wanting to hurt the other party.
