Adrian Younge Presents Linear Labs: São Paulo
Album · Soul · 2024
Multi-instrumentalist Adrian Younge has a way of streamlining dense sounds into something accessible. On this item for his Linear Labs imprint (distinct from his Jazz Is Dead output with Ali Shaheed Muhammad), Younge presents songs culled from other label projects: titles such as Afrodisco Makossa, Don’t Cry for the Devil, Azadi (feat. Liraz), and Proud (with ALA.NI. from Paris). There’s a panoply of reeds and brass, along with vintage keys and other miscellany, plus the lush sound of the Younge-arranged Linear Labs Orchestra, with Younge mainly on electric bass and guitar. Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier brings a centered calm to the dark, unpredictable harmonies of “Purification.” “Nossa Cor,” co-written with Brazil’s Samantha Schmütz, boasts a beautiful earworm melody enhanced with strings and percussion. Bilal journeys from silken and restrained to wholly over-the-top on “Spiraling,” while Snoop Dogg drops multiple verses on “Rules of the Game,” propelled by nasty fuzztone bass and synth hooks reminiscent of The Chronic.
