The History of Drum and Bass: 1995 (DJ Mix)
Album · Jungle/Drum'n'bass · 2024
For this fourth installment of Peshay’s DJ mix series celebrating the history of drum ’n’ bass, the British DJ and producer rolls it back to 1995, a year—as he tells Apple Music—that was filled with “so many great nights, so many amazing memories” for him. But it was also a pivotal year for the genre, with labels, releases, and artists pushing drum ’n’ bass in exciting new directions. “In 1995, record labels like Metalheadz and Good Looking, amongst others, were really getting into their stride,” says Peshay (aka Paul Pesce). “They both released countless tracks that have gone on to become legendary reference points throughout the years.” It was, he adds, an “amazing year for releases” that show that “drum ’n’ bass was becoming more experimental, producers were really pushing forwards and honing their craft. There were also many great club nights and festivals going off. And, who could forget one of my favorite club nights that I played at, Metalheadz Sunday Sessions at the Blue Note [in Hoxton, East London]? It was a place that fully embraced experimentation by breaking new material and new sounds.” This mix is the DJ’s snapshot of that year, with tracks coming from artists including Goldie, Roni Size & DJ Die, Dillinja, Photek, and more.
