In recent years, Grupo Marca Registrada appeared keen to expand upon their norteño strengths by dabbling with other genres. This took discernible shape on the Culiacán-based act’s 2024 offerings, THE GOAT and EVO. With the seven-track EP, they invert this ambition by focusing primarily on familiar música mexicana forms, albeit with a clear sense of creativity and a willingness to experiment within those perceived bounds. Opener “Lo Pude Lograr” takes the form of a truehearted corrido, one imbued with a promising work ethic and an inherent sense of familial loyalty. That industrious ethos carries on with the admirable affirmations of the accordion-accented “Gallo Fino,” though hopeless romantic vibes inevitably emerge with songs like the effusively affectionate “Super Peligrosa.” To that end, bandleader Fidel Oswaldo Castro paints a vivid picture of modern masculinity on “Expensive,” switching to a decidedly more vulnerable state for “En La Peda Sigo” and the simply devastating “Solo Fui Yo.”
