After emerging in 2014 as a fierce, funny teenager with a signature “sugar trap” sound, Rico Nasty was just ahead of the “rapper as rockstar” curve, dressing like the long-lost member of the Sex Pistols and popularizing a vocal-cord-shredding strain of mosh-rap.
But for her fourth studio album, RX, the rapper got back to basics, reconnecting with Kenneth Blume (formerly Kenny Beats), the in-demand producer with whom she made 2019’s Anger Management mixtape—a pivotal release in both artists’ careers.
The title will look familiar to those who’ve been following along: Rico began teasing the project in 2021, then put it on the backburner. But the album’s original ethos remains basically unchanged—dynamic bars over adventurous rap beats from Blume (plus a bonus beat from 100 gecs’ Dylan Brady on “Butthead”). On RX, Rico’s chemistry with Blume remains unchanged, from tough but girly bangers like “Cupcake” to wild sonic experiments like “CDG Foams.”
