Sometimes, the gigs you don’t play are as impactful as the ones you do. That’s a lesson that doo-wop duo Alexandra and Zachary James—aka Twin Temple—learned in the summer of 2026, when, on the eve of dropping their fourth album, they were reportedly kicked off a tour with country star Charley Crockett because of the demonic themes and occult aesthetics embedded in their music.
The ensuing media attention proved to be a more effective pre-release publicity campaign than any PR firm could muster up, though the Satanic-panic hysteria seems all the more ridiculous after you immerse yourself in the swooning serenades and orchestral elegance of Doomed Lovers, which could easily win over any God-fearing parishioner raised on Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn. For Twin Temple, the black-magick dressing of tracks like “Possessed” and “Haunt Me” is simply a campy theatrical device they use to sincerely recapture the angelic innocence of a time when rock ’n’ roll was branded the devil’s music.
Our Favorite Track: “Doomed Lovers” is the greatest string-swept torch song that David Lynch never got to place in an episode of Twin Peaks.
