Melodic guitar-pop-rock is an accurate, if bland, way of describing a band that evokes the finer points of Pavement, Red House Painters, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Luna, and so many other skilled veterans who understood just how difficult balancing the pop and rock parts of the equation could be. This Athens, Ga.–based quartet spent nearly an entire year putting together this autumnal collection. “Pale Hooves” veers toward the darker textures of R.E.M.’s Fables, while “Worth Fearing” recalls the somber ends of Dumptruck. There’s nothing radical here, but the songs are so good they deserve to be heard everywhere.
