While still in his mid-20s, Freddie De Tommaso became a breakout tenor sensation in the opera world in the late 2010s. Born in 1993 to an Italian father and a British mother in Kent, England, the singer developed an early affinity for opera by listening to Pavarotti and other popular Italian singers in his father’s restaurant in Tunbridge Wells. Tommaso began his singing career as a baritone before distinguishing himself as a tenor following his graduation from the Royal Academy of Music. Routinely stunning audiences by singing roles that pushed beyond the abilities of most young singers, Tommaso had his biggest breakthrough in 2020 as Pinkerton in the Wiener Staatsoper's Madama Butterfly. With a new recording contract from Decca in his back pocket, Tommaso recorded an album, Passione, that largely consisted of popular Neapolitan songs and arias, following in the tradition of his populist-minded tenor heroes Enrico Caruso and Franco Corelli. It was an instant bestseller, demonstrating the appeal of Tommaso's combination of refined style, sensitivity, and power.
