Markus Stenz is a German conductor known primarily for his work in the fields of opera and orchestral music. After pursuing courses at the School of Music in Cologne, where he studied with Volker Wangenheim, he went to Tanglewood to study conducting with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. From 1989 to 1995, Stenz was the artistic director of the Montepulciano Festival in Tuscany, and from 1994 to 1998, he served as the principal conductor of the London Sinfonietta. He conducted the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra from 1998 to 2004 and became the principal conductor of the Gürzenich Orchestra of Cologne in 2005. With this orchestra, Stenz recorded his audiophile cycle of Mahler symphonies for Oehms Classics. Other orchestras Stenz has conducted include the Hallé Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. Since 2012, he has served as chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. In opera, he has led performances at La Fenice, the Bavarian State Opera, La Scala, La Monnaie, the English National Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the Salzburg Festival, among many other operatic venues. Stenz has become closely associated with the operas of Henze, Janácek, and Wagner.
