Alka Yagnik’s beguiling vocals coloured unforgettable ’80s and ’90s Bollywood gems—and continue to captivate global audiences.
• Yagnik’s mother was a classical singer and guided the gifted vocalist, who started singing for All India Radio as a child.
• She learned the ropes of playback at a young age next to composer duos Kalyanji-Anandji and Laxmikant-Pyarelal, who would later be associated with several of her Bollywood highlights.
• She earned wider recognition with “Mere Angne Mein, Pt. 2” from the soundtrack of Laawaris (1981), which earned her a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Female Playback Singer—the first of dozens of nods to come in the following decades.
• She’s won seven Filmfare Awards in total, with her first in 1989 for “Ek Do Teen Char” (Tezaab). Her most recent came in 2005 for the title track of romcom Hum Tum.
• Yagnik has also won two National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer, for "Ghoonghat Ki Aadh Se" from Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke and the title track from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
• Her touching vocals shine especially through some of the most cherished love songs in Bollywood; in many of these she duets with fellow filmi superstar Kumar Sanu.
• Yagnik remains a fixture of the Indian music scene, participating in TV shows like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs alongside filmi and devotional recordings, as well as performing in countless live shows across the world.
