Lyric soprano Benita Valente spent most of her singing career based in the United States. She was highly regarded for her singing of Mozart and music for soprano and string quartet. She made her debut at the Freiburg Opera in 1962 but most of her singing career was based in the United States at the Metropolitan Opera. She was very versatile, interpreting music ranging from Handel to Libby Larsen, and was best known as a recitalist and an expert interpreter of art songs. Her 1977 recording of the Schoenberg String Quartet No. 2 with the Juilliard String Quartet was honored with a Grammy win. Her recordings can be found on several labels.
