Drummer Carl Allen is an esteemed jazz performer, bandleader, and educator whose exuberant, hard-swinging style builds upon the post-bop traditions of his idols Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, and Billy Higgins. First garnering notice in the early '80s as a member of Freddie Hubbard's group, Allen quickly emerged as a sought-after player, working with both contemporary and veteran artists, including Jackie McLean, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Golson, Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison, and others. Along with having taught at both Juilliard and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Allen runs his own production company and has released his own small-group albums, including 1989's Piccadilly Square, 1995's Testimonial, and 2007's Get Ready (one of several collaborations with bassist Rodney Whitaker). In 2025, he delivered Tippin' with bassist Christian McBride and saxophonist Chris Potter.
