Craig Lucas leaves it all out there. The South African pop star first emerged in 2017, and quickly became an artist willing to get real vulnerable, real quick with his rapidly growing fanbase. After winning season two of The Voice SA that same year in his home country, he unveiled his panoramic debut, Restless, a collection of electro-tinged pop anthems of love, desperation, and raunchiness. “Hearts Exposed” dances along with handclaps and disco-inspired synths, above which Lucas admits: “’Cause I can't wait to get you in my bed/Do you need me?/Do you need me, baby?” The desperation in that question lingers long past the song’s finish. In 2024, he upped the ante, following singles like “Falling in Love” and “Forever Green Forever Gold” with “High, Drunk & Horny,” a title that leaves little to the imagination. The guitar-driven track drowns misery with unabashed desire, following up his raunchy admission with the song’s philosophical core—a neat disguise at the heart of Lucas’ work. “But I'm sad and I'm lonely,” he sings. “I need someone to hold me.”
