Chi è Diana Damrau
Opera is a star-filled business, but not many singers have an asteroid named after them, as does Diana Damrau: one of the most admired sopranos on the circuit, with a silvery tone that illuminates a wide repertory but excels in Mozart, Donizetti, Verdi, Strauss. Born in 1971 in Bavaria, she progressed up the traditional hierarchy of German opera houses before a breakthrough year in 2000 that saw her debut in Vienna (as Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute) and New York (as Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos). At that time, she focused on the brilliantly embellished coloratura repertoire that those two roles define. But growing interest in 19th-century bel canto—music for a heavier voice but still decorative—opened up new possibilities. As did German song, with Damrau embarking on internationally high-profile projects like a touring show of Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch, sharing the stage with tenor Jonas Kaufmann.
