Formed in New Zealand and then relocating to Australia, Dragon became rock heroes in both countries. They came together in Auckland in 1972 and released a pair of powerful prog albums that didn’t gain much traction. After moving to Sydney in ’75, they pursued a more immediately accessible brand of rock, full of hooks and arena-ready tunes. They made headway with 1977’s Sunshine, but it was the follow-up, Running Free, that blasted Dragon into the upper echelon of Kiwi and Aussie rock, aided by the riff-happy “April Sun In Cuba,” one of their biggest hits. Dragon didn’t lack for challenges in the ’70s and ’80s—two members suffered fatal drug overdoses, two others were seriously wounded in a car accident, and there were multiple personnel shifts—but they continued refining their sound and expanding their audience. After periods of inactivity in the ’80s and ’90s, the band enjoyed a sustaining renaissance starting in 2006 with a revamped lineup led by founding bassist Todd Hunter, eventually earning Hall of Fame status in both New Zealand and Australia.
