South African house DJ and producer Echo Deep plies an innovative and captivating blend of Afrohouse and deep house characterized by its soulful, upbeat, and life-affirming vibes.
Born Tshepo Molefe in Soweto, he caught the music bug at a young age, listening to the radio every day after school. He began accompanying a local choir into the recording studio to learn about the process of music production, and one day asked the producer if he could have a go on the DAW software. From there he was hooked and began making his own tracks. Influenced by big Afrohouse names like Culoe de Song, Black Coffee, and Vinny da Vinci, he worked steadily on improving his craft, sending demos off to labels until one was accepted. Later he moved to Johannesburg.
Echo Deep has released numerous hit singles (including "Lies," "Like That," "Sabisayo," and "Who You Are"), collaborations, and EPs; his debut solo album, The Music City, appeared in 2015 on Blaq Diamond Boyz Records. Respected for his precision, timing, and excellent mixing skills, he has appeared on TV, shared stages with some of his heroes, and snagged regular DJ slots on both South African and British radio. In 2020, he was nominated for producer of the year at the City Awards. ~ John D. Buchanan
