Eric Bellinger is an earnest student of R&B history, and itās made for a prolific, era-crossing career. Born in 1986, the Compton-raised artist got his first break penning steamy tracks for 2010s leading men like Usher, Chris Brown, and Trey Songz, but he smashed through the divider separating songwriters from singers with his debut album, 2014ās The Rebirth. That LP introduced a conversational vocalist with a no-holds-barred approach to reinventing the past: sugary come-on āImaginationā coyly swirled up the theme from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory with Joeās amorous 1999 single āI Wanna Know.ā Bellinger carried that flirtatious energy onto 2015ās Cuffing Season, kicking off his commitment-focused winter album series with āCreep,ā a seductive flip of the 1994 TLC hit that not only inverts the originalās unfaithful-lover concept, but also features a fresh T-Boz cameo. Bellingerās knack for revising his favorite songs is a constant in his ever-evolving discography: āMain Thang,ā from 2018ās Eazy Call, finds him rapping over elements of Xscapeās yearning 1995 single āWho Can I Run To?ā Whether heās using old-school samples as thematic threads to weave into his modern trap-soul serenades, or blending the sounds of R&B, Afrobeats, pop, and amapiano on his 2024 album Itāll All Make Sense Later and its 2025 sequel It All Makes Sense, Bellinger reflects a distinct voice in the R&B world.

The intentional fragment that goes on and on is so unexpected, yet to necessary. I was able to get so much off my chest and do it creatively to where it doesnāt seem like itās too long, even though the song is over five minutes.
