Known for his semi-formal attire and smooth, soulful sound, Gaba Cannal adds a touch of class to amapiano (Zulu for "pianos"). He also adds a touch of credibility, being one of its few producers to actually play piano, which he learned in church while growing up in Daveyton, Gauteng (where he was born Khaka Yena in 1995). Cannal took quickly to amapiano, specializing in a chill vibe with jazzy flourishes and deep emotional undercurrents. In 2014, he released his debut EP, Abundance, and in 2018, he was nominated for the South African Music Awards' best underground record of the year for his featured spot on "Magic" by Da Kruk. Two years later, Cannal released his audaciously titled debut album, Amapiano Legacy, which juxtaposed uptempo amapiano with downtempo deep house. Beginning in 2019, he began applying his immaculate sound to a series of "Suit and Tie" EPs consisting of swank remixes of his favorite tracks by other producers.
