Brooklyn-based psychedelic rock band GIFT incorporate elements of shoegaze into their music, with nods to the '90s U.K. music scene.
The band formed in 2019, just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Despite having only played two shows before the lockdowns began, frontman TJ Freda continued working on the music in isolation. Months of writing and recording in his bedroom resulted in GIFT’s debut album, 2022’s Momentary Prescence. After the restrictions were lifted, the band bought an apartment together to write and record in. Collaborating in person, they produced their second album, 2024’s Illuminator, which drew more heavily from the '90s, citing Primal Scream’s Screamadelica, Massive Attack, and Spiritualized as touch points.
