Singer-songwriter J.J. Cale taught himself the ropes of sound engineering and built his own recording studio while still living with his parents in Tulsa, OK.
ā After he signed to Leon Russell and producer Denny Cordellās Shelter Records in 1969, his first four albums each made the Billboard charts.
ā In 1970, Eric Clapton had a Top 20 hit with Caleās song āAfter Midnight,ā and his cover of āCocaineā was a Top 40 hit seven years later.
ā Caleās biggest hit, 1972ās āCrazy Mama,ā peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 chartāand mightāve gone higher had he agreed to lip-sync it on American Bandstand.
