The Jamaica-born Joe Harriott arrived in the U.K. in 1951 and quickly established himself as a formidable bop saxophonist. After working with Tony Kinsey, Ronnie Scott, and other leading British players, Harriott formed his own group, and immersed himself in the avant-garde concepts flowering in the 1960s, exploring out principals on the landmark albums FREE FORM, ABSTRACT, and MOVEMENT. Harriott would make his mark in jazz fusion as well, playing with Indian musicians in the double quintet Indo-Jazz Fusions, which he co-led with violinist John Mayer. In his later years, he often worked with Michael Garrick, but was unable to finance a group and spent his last few years touring the U.K. as a soloist, playing bebop and standards with local rhythm sections.
