John Kirkpatrick was a pianist who played a key role in the popularization of Charles Ives's music, both as a performer and archivist of the composer's manuscripts. He gave the Concord Sonata's landmark premiere in 1939 and recorded it multiple times. Kirkpatrick also championed other American composers, including Copland, Ruggles, and Gershwin. He taught at Cornell for more than two decades and served as professor of piano and curator of Ives's archive at Yale starting in 1968. His albums include the groundbreaking Concord recordings from 1945 and 1968; Ives songs and violin sonatas; and albums of works by Gottschalk, MacDowell, and Ruggles. In 2026, Kirkpatrick and his student Donald Berman were heard on Concordance: 150 Years of Charles Ives, which included a 1974 live performance of the Concord Sonata by Kirkpatrick, recorded by Owsley Stanley and Phil Lesh. Kirkpatrick died in 1991 at the age of 86.
