Soprano Karen Slack has worked to commission pieces by African American composers. She has appeared in several films, including Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls (2010). Slack has appeared with major American opera companies, including the Lyric Opera of Chicago, where she sang the role of Serena in Porgy and Bess in 2014. She has made several recordings, including Beyond the Years, an album of unpublished songs by Florence Price (2024).
