Since releasing 2010's City Stories, Norwegian composer, tubist, and bass trumpet player Daniel Herskedal has pushed the sonic and technical limitations of his chosen instruments. His style weds formal classical composing techniques to jazz improvisation and folk traditions. His environmental trilogy on Edition Records -- 2015's Slow Eastbound Train, 2017's The Roc, and 2019's Voyage -- won European and American critics over. In 2019 Herskedal collaborated with Saami traditional singer Marja Mortensson on Lååje = Dawn that wed South and Ume Saami yoik melodies to a classical chamber quintet. 2020's Call for Winter was performed solo by Herskedal on tuba and bass trumpet with overdubs. The ensemble outing Harbour followed in July 2021, as did Desert Lighthouse. 2022's Out of the Fog featured guitarist Eivind Aarset. In March 2024, he self-released the digital album, A Single Sunbeam. Call for Winter II: Resonance appeared in September.
