Kebā Moā is an all-time giant in the modern blues realm. Born Kevin Roosevelt Moore in 1951 in L.A., Moā was raised on the genreāand the sweet Sunday sounds of gospelāby a Texan mother and Louisianian father. As a hired guitar-slinger in his early 20s, Moā earned a gold record for the 1975 Jefferson Starship instrumental āGit Fiddler,ā but stayed mostly behind the scenes until his 1994 self-titled debut. Kebā Moā established the songwriter as carrying the torch of Delta blues music with bare-bones, no-frills fare like the love song āEvery Morningā or his funky take on Robert Johnsonās classic āCome On In My Kitchen.ā Moā may be a bluesman at heart, but his catalog is expansive, incorporating soft pop (1996ās āThe Actionā), folk (2004ās āShave Yoā Legsā), and smooth jazz (2011ās āThe Reflection (I See Myself In You)ā). The late 2010s found him in a collaborative spirit, and he earned a Grammy for the down-home blues artifact TajMo, a full-length team-up with fellow icon Taj Mahal.
