Lunay’s bubbling reggaetón and impressively smooth Latin trap may have rocketed him to global star status as a teen, but his youthful sound feels grounded by experience beyond his years. Born in Corozal, Puerto Rico, in 2000, Jefnier Osorio Moreno first showed prodigious talent in soccer, but around the age of 15 he began to get attention for the freestyle skills he’d often practice in front of his teammates. His early uploads—including improvising over hits by Drake and Desiigner—culminated in 2017’s “Aparentas,” credited simply to “Jefnier,” which showcased both his passionate rap cadence and unhurried R&B coo. The woozy trap groove grabbed the attention of producers Chris Jeday (Don Omar, Cardi B) and Gaby Music (Ozuna, J Balvin) who helped him relaunch as Lunay, master of risqué wordplay and romantic tales. While his steamy 2019 breakthrough “A Solas” was certainly mature, the follow-up was grown in a different way: “Soltera,” a dance-floor-simmering bop that earned him a place among the world’s Latin pop leaders, was a tribute to independent women who stay single by choice. The remix found the Up Next alum matching bars with Bad Bunny and his biggest influence, Daddy Yankee, and guaranteed that his debut album would be stacked with reputable guests. Sure enough, that year’s Épico came with cameos spanning reggaetón history, from Wisin & Yandel to Ozuna, not to mention a sense that Lunay has many successful years ahead of him, too.
