Something for Kate emerged out of Australia's fertile ’90s alternative-rock scene but carved out an enduring career by broadening their sonic palette, as heard on the earnest 2001 pop-rock hit “Monsters.” Paul Dempsey (vocals/guitar) and schoolmate Clint Hyndman (drums) cofounded the Melbourne-based band in 1994. Something for Kate first made waves with the melodic, grungy singles “Dean Martin” and “Captain (Million Miles an Hour),” the latter of which appeared on their 1997 full-length debut, Elsewhere For Eight Minutes. Something for Kate’s sound—and commercial fortunes—shifted after Stephanie Ashworth joined the band in 1998 on bass guitar. Not only did the group release crisp and bracing singles such as 1999’s “Electricity,” but they also turned out a string of commercially successful albums, including the chart-topping efforts The Official Fiction and Desert Lights. In 2020, Something for Kate released their first song in eight years, “Situation Room,” which served as an introduction to a new full-length, The Modern Medieval.
