Sophie Agnel is an improvising pianist from France. Classically trained, she shifted first to jazz and finally free improvisation. She turned to studying the "prepared-piano" methods of John Cage and Lucia Dlugoszewski, and altered them for her own coherent yet fluid, dramatic music. A pianist with Orchestre National de Jazz (2014-2017), she was affectionately dubbed an "elite keyboard terrorist." Her debut , Solo, appeared in 2000, and was followed by Rouge Gris Bruit with electronicists Jérôme Noetinger and Lionel Marchetti in 2001. In 2007, Tasting appeared in duo with vocalist Phil Minton, followed by 2009's solo Capsizing Moments. In 2013, Agnel, bassist John Edwards, and drummer Steve Noble released the live Meteo, and reprised the union in 2018 on Aqisseq. 2022 saw La Pierre Tachée with saxophonist John Butcher, and Animals in 2023 in trio with drummer Michael Vatcher and turntablist Joke Lanz. The latter worked with her on February 2025's Ella, preceding another solo album, Song, in March.
